The Message Board

The "Message Board" is a place where you can post things that might be of some import to AHS Alumni. If you'ld like something added to this page, such as reunion anouncements, retirement parties or the like, please email the site host to have a short message put up. Also, at the bottom of this page you'll find non-class specific messages about reunion contacts and page hosting.

Want to join the the AHSAA??? Click on "MEMBERSHIP" at left for more info.

Click on the "Email Links" link to see an email list for all people who have contacted us and asked to be listed. Don't worry, we won't list you if don't want us to.

Click on the Class Numbers to see a page specific to your graduating year. You might notice that most of them are blue. a very sad color indeed! We'd be glad to change this to red, but that means somebody (maybe you) from your class would need to host that page. See the message at the bottom of this page for more info.

Are You Planning a Reunion ?

Or better yet, planning to plan a reunion and not yet started. In either case you'll need as many resources as possible for locating and notifying your classmates of the coming event. We'll be on the lookout for tools and media that you can use to make this job more rewarding (in shear numbers of people) if not fun.

As this page takes shape we'll add names of contacts and other resources that you may find valuable for getting the word out. As well, there'll be tips on methodologies for searches that work for different reunion aniversaries, ie. 5th, 10th & 20th methodologies are different as people, their folks, their siblings and their friends become harder to locate.

To start out though, here are the basics:

    American High School Staff
    (510) 796-1776

Maxine Danielsen - Information Contact For Reunions. She does NO coordination, but will give out phone numbers of reunion commitee members that are given to her. Maxine will, for a limited number of years, keep copies of those "To The Parents Of: Your Name Here" labels used to mail report cards, detention notices and all sorts of useful info on your high school career to your folks. Don't laugh! If you're planning your five year reunion, this will be your saving grace, as most peoples folks will still be in the same place at that point. After five years all bets are off, trust us, we've done reunions and many of the parents addresses are no longer valid.

Amy McNamara- In Charge Of School Activities. Amy is the person that you call to get notices put up on the marquee in front of the school. I've been told that, depending on the number of activies that need to be listed, availablity of space may be limited. In other words you might get bumped off of the board. I'm sure one of you clever folks can come up with some sort of (legal) bribery to keep your notice up on the board. Let us know what works.

The Alumni Association Web Site (You Are Here!) Email Derick Joy, Association Web Host
    - I maintain the association site including: Alumni Home, Membership, The Email Listing and (this) Messege Board Page.

Class year numbers at left indicate that a page is hosted by a class member (mine is '77). Hosting a page that is specific to a class is an involved process. If you need to put more info up, you'll need to either host or find a fellow classmate willing to host your page. This could be temporary, for your reunion only, but would be preferable for an extended period of time. That is, we're looking for folks willing to be involved for the long haul. See the paragraph on "Page Hosting" below.

    Page Hosting (For Individual Classes)

For all of you Webmeisters (or those of you toying with the idea of becoming one) there will soon be a page with pertinent info on designing for this alumni site. Until then, the list below is your starting point for figuring out whether or not your willing to become a web host. And yes, we are looking for folks to host pages for their individual classes.

To even think about taking this on you'll need to know/have a few things. They are:

As a preliminary, we would suggest asking your friends and associates about their knowledge and capabilities on this subject. You may wish to do this as a group effort.

    1. Do you have web space available? This would most likely be true if you have some sort of personal web account (ISP for Internet Service Provider), say for instance an AOL account. You probably DO NOT have this capability if you only have an email box at work.
    2. Something to say. Or put better, Content... like an email list, info about reunions or other gatherings, recent pictures and the like. We'll gladly send you the email list that we have, and forward any email that we receive from your classmates. As well, some sense of design and layout is valuable. You know, good taste.
    3. Knowledge of html (Hyper Text Mark-up Language), which is the language of the web. Derick Joy will gladly give assistance on this, if... and only if you are willing to purchase a book on the subject. The one he's using right now is "html 4 For The World Wide Web" by Elizabeth Castro on Peachpit Press. It's only $17.95, it's well layed out and easy to learn from. It's his book of choice for helping people out with html. This may sound daunting, but once you get into it you'll find that (#2) Organizing and Laying Out Content, is actually harder to do.
    4. A way to up-load (send) your web pages to your ISP. This would be some sort of FTP utility. If you're with AOL, they'll make this available to you. You'll need to get ahold of one if you're not with AOL.
    5. A moderate amount of time to learn if you don't already have the knowlaedge to do this.
    6. One caveat: Please, no hosted community type things like MSN's Communities. These things usually come with tons of advertisements, they have the host's name pasted all over them, and in some cases, they take over the whole page eliminating our navigation bar, basically kicking us out of our own site. So, if you plan on hosting for your class, please only do this as a private venture, on your own space, with no corporate strings attached. For example, as mentioned above, AOL let's you put up your own site without getting their fingerprints all over it. Also, most non-portal ISPs like Netcom, Earthlink, Best Internet and the like, give you web space as part of your basic service package. This is the way to go.

If you're not frightened off after the above list, let Derick Joy know and he'll help, and then link your page into our site.
